Painting over mould without proper treatment can cause it to return quickly. Here’s the best way to do it including:

- Tips for painting over mould
- The best paint/products to use when painting over mould
1. Identify and Fix the Cause (The most important step)
• Mould is often caused by dampness, condensation, or poor ventilation. Before painting, identify and resolve any underlying issue. If there is no structural issues, leaks or rising damp found, most likely cause is condensation and poor ventilation. While we aren't qualified to give advice on damp and mould, the following tips may help:
- Open your windows and doors, allowing 10-15 mins of ventilation daily. Especially after showering or cooking.
- Ensure all extraction fans are working and in use when cooking and showering.
- Don't dry washing on radiators.
- Ensure a balanced temperature throughout your property.
- Purchasing hygrometers (these can be found on Amazon for about £10) is a great way to understand if humidity levels in your home are unbalanced.
2. Before you start: Protect Yourself.
• Wear gloves, goggles, and a mask to avoid inhaling spores.
• Open windows for ventilation.
3. Remove the Mould
• Use a mould remover spray (available at DIY stores) or a homemade solution of one part bleach to three parts water.
• Scrub the affected area with a sponge or brush. Dispose of any cloths or sponges used.
• Rinse with clean water and let the surface dry completely.
4. Remove flaking paint.
• Use a scraper, wire brush or sander to remove all flaking paint.
• Fill holes or uneven surfaces with filler and sand to a smooth finish. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours.
5. Apply Primer
• An optional step which can add further protection from returning mould. Options include water based, oil based or shellac based primers which gives the fastest drying time.
• Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Paint with Mould-Resistant Paint
• Choose a high-quality anti-mould or anti-condensation paint, especially in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Cheap paint is cheap for a reason and will result in less protection, shorter lifespan and poor coverage. A personal recommendation is Zinsser Anti Mould Paint.
• Apply at least two coats for best protection.
These steps should prevent any regrowth and keep your home safe. If you would like our help in completing this work, get in contact on 07752 160569 or info@noadespainting.com.
